Movie Review: Ip Man

The entire Ip Man series is outstanding and probably one of the best martial arts movies of all-time.

Donnie Yen, who played Ip Man, delivered a truly solid performance in all movies in this series. The historical accuracy of certain events depicted were at times dramatized, but nobody would be disappointed with the action scenes that really put the story together.

The classic Ip Man Wing Chun move with his rapid punches and the final battles for each movie were epic. You can sense the intensity in the character and the martial arts moves were so smooth to watch.

I highly recommended the Ip Man series for fans of martial arts cinema. But, more importantly, the morals and virtues that Ip Man teaches to his peers, students, and his son were even more powerful than all the martial arts scenes combined.

The pace and storyline in the movie was very well done; this is a very touching movie about the Wing Chun grandmaster’s life and gives you a bit of history on Japanese invasion era.

9/10

Some of my favourite Ip Man quotes are below:

  • ”I didn’t come here today to prove which is better, Chinese or Western boxing. All people have different status in life, I don’t believe that one person’s integrity is worth more than the others. I hope that we can start to respect each other.”
  • ”Accomplishment uses diligence as a goal.”
  • ”It is difficult for a student to pick a good teacher, but it is more difficult for a teacher to pick a good student.”
  • “We all have inner demons to fight, we call these demons, fear and hatred and anger. If you do not conquer them then a life of one hundred years is a tragedy. If you do, then a life of a single day can be a triumph.”
  • ”Do not fight with the strength, absorb it and it flows, use it.”
