Yesterday, I shared some word trivia for your next coffee conversation.
Here’s a few more if you’re looking for some fun facts to share before the lunch hour:
- Believe it or not, there are 2 five letter words in the English language that contain no vowels. They are crwth and cwtch since the ‘w’ is treated like a vowel. Crwth is the name for an ancient celtic instrument that is similar to a violin. And cwtch is a welsh word for hug.
- The plastic coating at the end of a shoelace is actually called aglet, which comes from the French word for needle.
- The longest word found in a major dictionary is 45 letters long: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It technically refers to a type of lung disease caused by silica dust, but I have no idea how to say it in one breath.
- Penguin literally means ‘white head,’ even though their heads are usually black and their bellies are usually white.
If you like these word trivia, I should think of some related to grammar to blow your mind away.
