My Roommate Is a Gumiho

If you’re into rom com, then this K-drama is perfect for you. I had so much fun watching this one, and the female and male leads were such a perfect match too.

But before I get into the story, what exactly is a gumiho? It’s a nine-tailed fox, which is a creature that appears in the folktales on East Asia and legends of Korea. This creature can freely transform, among other things, into human forms, and in My Roommate is a Gumiho, the gumiho must change into a human before they turn 1000 years old (each year they live, they grow a tail, so they can only have a maximum of 9 tails). Each gumiho possess a marble, which they would use to gather human energy, needed to turn into a human and to survive. However, it’s not that simple. To turn into a human, it’s not simply the task of gathering human energy over the years, but also needing to colour their marble blue, which can only be done when they experience humanity.

I enjoyed the character development in the story and how they speak to the emotions that make us human. To hurt. To love. To sacrifice. So, in this K-drama, the story begins when the 999-year old gumiho (Shin Woo Yeo, aka “Sir”) meets a human girl (Lee Dam), who accidentally swallowed his fox marble. The thrilling love story between Shin Woo Yeo and Lee Dam begins when Dam moves in with Sir while he tries to figures out how to remove the marble. We learn later in the show that he always knew how to remove the marble from her, but because he has grown feelings for her, he didn’t want to let her go. When a gumiho removes a marble from a human after gathering energy, they will erase their memories and forget them. Sir didn’t want Dam to forget about him, so he kept her by his side for quite some time. Until he realized that being with her would put her in danger, then he decided to let her go. Little did he realize, Dam was strong-minded and the magic spell to erase her memories did not work, leaving her confused and depressed that Sir would give up on the feelings they shared.

Make sure to watch My Roommate is a Gumiho to find out how their love story ends and whether this 999-year old gumiho can find a way to turn human.
